Saturday, August 25, 2001 Team Ontario 18s lose in WS semis, Axford to Notre DameLexington Kentucky Dixie scored five times in the first inning and was on the way to a 9-0 win in the NABF World Series semi-final at Frawley Stadium. Right fielder Matt Stocco (Guelph) and third baseman P.J. McDonald ( Burlington) each had two hits for Team Ontario in a losing cause. Central Florida beat Stahl (Del.) Post in the other semi-final and went on to beat Lexington 12-2 in the final. The semi-final loss ended Team Ontario's season with a 61-15-5 record, capping a successful season which saw five players drafted: right-hander John Axford (Port Dover), seventh round, Seattle Mariners; catcher David Corrente (Chatham), 14th round, Toronto Blue Jays; right-hander Mark McDonald (Burlington), 29th round, Jays; right-hander Chris Kemlo (Oshawa), 34th round, New York Yankees; third baseman P.J. McDonald, 43rd round, Jays. Axford was 7-1 with a 1.67 ERA, striking out 58, while walking 27 in 42 innings. Rather than sign with Seattle, Axford chose to attend Notre Dame University. Brad Bissell (Penetang) was also impressive with a 1.39 ERA, fanning 104 in 65 1/3 innings, while going 9-1. Team Ontario finished fifth in the Perfect Game/Baseball America World Wood Bat tournament in Jupiter, Fla. out of 50 teams; won the CEBC spring league; won the Sarnia Can/Am tourney; won the Rawlings Welland Canadian Classic tourney and took the Welland NABF Regional to reach Wilmington. In Wilmington, the Team Ontario 18s, coach by Jason Chee-Aloy, Jack Rice, Hugh Walters, Peter Bargenda and Bob Lecours opened with a 7-2 win over the Norwood (Ill.) Blues as Scott Robinson (Pickering) pitched five innings allowing one earned run and fanning four. Left fielder Jeff Murdoch (Pickering) had a pair of doubles, while shortstop Philip Van Horne (Scarborough) and P.J. McDonald had one double each. McDonald had three hits, while Van Horne and Murdoch each drove in a pair of runs. Stahl Post (Del.) scored in the bottom of the eighth for a 2-1 win over Ontario. Lefty Bissell had six strikeouts in six innings while allowing one unearned run. Reliever Chris Tonneguzzi (Thunder Bay) was saddled with the loss, allowing an unearned run. Centre fielder Jeff Tobin (Pickering) drove in the lone Ontario run as its record fell to 1-1. Ontario scored a single run in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 victory over the Kenosha (Wis.) Indians. Right-hander Chris Kemlo (Oshawa) went the distance allowing two hits and one earned run, fanning three. Murdoch had a double and drove in two RBIs for Ontario, while catcher Greg Fleming (Pickering) had a pair of singles. The other hits went to second baseman David Latour (Barrie), first baseman Aaron Jamieson (Fenelon Falls) and Scott McGuigan (Blenheim). Fleming homered in support of right-hander John Axford in a 7-5 win over the Carroll County (Md.) Rangers. Axford, put up four scoreless innings before allowing three runs in the sixth. Axford fanned eight in 5 2/3 innings. Reliever Scott Kelly (Belleville) pitched the 1 2/3 innings allowing two unearned runs for the save. Murdoch and Jamieson each had two hits, while DH Jon Bridge (Simcoe) and Van Horne also had hits. Murdoch hit over .400 for the tournament; Robinson, Bissell, Kemlo and Kelly pitched exceptionally well Where are the Team Ontario 18s headed: Corrente signed with the Jays and is playing with Rookie-Class Medicine Hat. Latour is headed to Central Michigan University, Van Horne, University of Buffalo, P.J. McDonald, North Central Texas Junior College, Thomas Campbell, Ellsworth Community College; Tobin, University of British Columbia; Stocco, Spartanburg Junior College; Bissell, Charleston Southern University, Robinson, University of Maine; Axford, Notre Dame; Kemlo, Santa Fe Junior College; Mark McDonald, Grayson Junior College and others are returning to high school.
