Roppa flies north for Blues

Players of the Week, Week 4 Honours

By BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Canadian Baseball

Each fall anywhere from 550-600 Canadian student-atheletes head south to attend school and play baseball.

We've been aware of this southern migration for some time.

However, we've found a rare bird who has flown north for the winter.

Catcher Dominic Roppa (fifth year, Morton, Ill.) is a dentistry student, at the University of Toronto.

Roppa, who played at Northern Illinois University for three seasons (1996-97-98), helped the Blues to a fourth-place finish.

Roppa is this week's winner of the SLAM! Canadian Baseball University Player of the Week.

How Roppa's week that was went:

How Roppa's week that was went as he:

 * Doubled and knocked in a run in a 7-1 win over the Wilfird Laurier Golden Hawks at the scenic 9th Line Complex in Mississauga.

 * Singled in a 2-1 loss to Laurier.

 * Singled in a 2-1 loss to the Brock Badgers at Community Park in St. Catharines.

 * Knocked in the only run in a 3-1 loss to the Brock Badgers.

Brock finished first in the OUA regular season followed by the McMaster Marauders, led by second baseman Kevin Comiskey, who has had an outstanding season after missing 2003 due to a broken hand.

And then came a New York 5 o'clock traffic jam. The Waterloo Warriors, Toronto, Guelph Western and Laurier all finished tied for third place with 8-9 records.

Waterloo was allocated the third spot based on their run differential amongst the tied teams, which was a plus 23.

The Varsity Blues gained fourth with a plus 13 in point differential. Guelph, at minus five, Western at minus five and Laurier, at minus 17, finished out of the playoffs.

 And elsewhere:

Some day down the road he will Dr. Paikin to you, but right now he's trouble for opposing pitchers.

Trouble starts with T and that rhymes with P. As in first baseman Jeremy Paikin, of McMaster.

Paikin helped lead McMaster to a second place finish in the Ontario Universities Athletics association with a .523 average.

Paikin (fifth year, Dundas, Ont.) leads the league with a Paikin had two hits and knocked in three runs in a 6-2 win over the Western Mustangs at Bernie Arbour Stadium in Hamilton. Paikin was hit by a pitch in the first, singled in two runs in the second and singled in a run in the fourth.
