Canada ousted with 3-3 mark
By BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Canadian Baseball
Team Canada isn't expected to beat Cuba.
Yet, after losing to to both Chinese-Taipei and Korea, Canada needed a win over the host team to assure that they would advance to the next round of the 35th World Cup.
And when they did not beat seven-time, defending-champion Cuba, suffering an 8-0 defeat at Latinoamericano Stadium in Havanna, Cuba. Canada trailed 1-0 entering the seventh inning.
After that loss, Canada had to sit and watch on the final day of round-robin play hoping for help from Italy.
However, Korea dropped Italy 4-2 leading a three-way tie for third place between Chinese-Taipei, Korea and Canada. All three countries had 3-3 records, but both Chinese-Taipei and Korea had knocked off Canada.
Canada defeated second-place Nicaragua 4-2, Russia 10-0 and Italy 5-3 for its three wins.
Besides the loss to Cuba, Canada lost a 17-5 blowout to Chinese-Taipei by and to Korea 10-2 score, despite the fact Canada led 2-1 after six innings. The game changed when starter Jeremy Herauf (Regina, Sask.) was hit with a pitch on a leg and had to leave in the second inning. Korea scored in the sixth against reliever Sean Jones (Hamilton, Ont.) to take the lead.
Coach Gary Picone (Trail, B.C.) saw his team finish at 3-3, tied for fourth in Pool A. Only Cuba (6-0), Japan (7-0), Team USA (5-1), Panama (5-2), Nicaragua (4-2) and Brazil (4-3) had better records. Yet, since Canada lost to Chinese-Taipei and Korea.
Canada will finish tied for ninth with The Netherlands, who also was 3-3. The ninth-place finish is only a smidgen better than a year ago when Canada finished 11th at the World Cup in Taiwan.
Lefty Jordy Alexander (Burnaby, BC) allowed a run to Cuba in the first and it stayed that way until the seventh when he allowed two more. Alexander fanned four Cuban hitters.
Jones took over and allowed another run, before Chad Ricketts (Thorold, Ont.) got out of the jam and pitched a scoreless eighth.
Danny Prata (Repentigny, Que.) was touched for three runs in the ninth before Matt Miller (Mississauga, Ont.) closed out the ninth.
DH Aaron Fera (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) had a pair of hits for Canada. Fera led Team Canada hitters with a .381 average.
The other hits, all singles, went to left fielder Rob Butler (East York, Ont.) who hit .348 for the second highest total, first baseman Greg Morrison (Medicine Hat, Alta.), right fielder Rich Butler (East York, Ont.), centre fielder Kris Cox (Delta, BC) and second baseman Max Poulin (St. Esustache, Que.).
Chinese-Taipei edged Italy 5-4, while in other games The Netherlands beat Mexico 6-3, Nicaragua edged Korea 3-2, Brazil beat France 7-4, Japan edged Team USA2-1 and Panama beat China 17-1.
And on the final day -- Canada had a be since Guam failed to show leaving only seven teams in Pool A -- Korea beat Italy 4-2 in the game that mattered for Canada, while in other games, Russia beat Chinese-Taipei 4-1, Brazil blanked China 4-0, Japan edged Mexico 8-6, Cuba beat Nicaragua 7-1, Panama thumped France 19-2 and the Team USA-The Netherlands game was rained out after three innings.
