McGee pitches UNB to title

Players of the Week, Week 6 Honours

By BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Canadian Baseball
To win a national title a club means contributions from everyone on the roster.

From the back-up catcher to the fifth outfielder, from opening day until the final out is made and the celebrations begin.

Well, the New Brunswick Cougars had plenty of people chipping in, but at the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association championships it was almost a one-man show.

Jay McGee picked up the UNB in relief in a 4-2, eight-inning win over the Saint Mary's Huskies and then came back to pitch a complete-game shutout in the national final as UNB edged the defending champion Laval Rouge Et Or 3-0 at Ballantyne Park, Dorval, Que.

The win ends the Laval run of four consecutive championships atop the CIBA.

So, without a doubt, McGee (Moncton, N.B.) is the final winner of the final SLAM! Canadian Baseball University Player of the Week honors.

McGee pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing two hits and striking out four in the extra-inning win over SMU.

Later in the day he was fresh as a spring tulip, coming back to blank Laval. McGee pitched a three-hit shutout striking out six.

McGee also blanked SMU 12-0 in the opener of the Cougars best-of-three conference sweep as UNB won its sixth straight conference title.

UNB, finalists in 1998 and 2001, had other help along the way, from the likes of:

  • Curtis Chaisson who hit a solo home run which stood as the winning run in the championship final. Chaisson was named tournament MVP.

  • Matt Cheney, who edged John Biggar of SMU, as the Atlantic Conference's pitcher of the year. Cheney pitched UNB to a 7-0 win over the Durham Lords at the nationals, tossing a three-hit shutout striking out 12.

  • Dave Barr, the three-time national winner of the George Brett award as the top hitter in the country.

  • First baseman Josh Collins, who earned all-Canadian team honours of players selected from the national CIBA tourney. Collins also pitched a 7-0 shutout over SMU at the nationals, allowing three hits, while fanning six.

  • Shortstop Tyson Waye, who also made the all-Canadian team.

  • Tim Burns, who pitched a two-hit, 1-0 shutout McGill, fanning six.

     And in other news ...

  • The Toronto Varsity Blues won the OUA title beating the McMaster Maurders in a deciding game at the 9th Line Diamond in Mississauga. Toronto decided before the season started not to attend the nationals. The decision by Toronto changed the set-up for the nationals. Under CIBA rules, only the conference champs can attend the nationals. However, an amendment was passed that modifies the event. With only three conferences participating, the championship was opened to the winner and runner-up from each of the three conferences. Instead of a four team championship, it became a six-team tourney.

Murphy completed his two-year term and decided to retire after 10 years in university baseball. Murphy remains on the Executive Committee as Past President.

Bullock is a former player and founder of University of Ottawa team and served as convenor of the Ontario Conference as well as being the association's vice president for finance for the past four years.

Daniel Nauth (Kingston, Ont. -- Canada's first capital) was elected administrative Vice President. Nauth, a law grad from Queen's, is also graduating from the Queen's program. He was the top pitcher champion this year in the Ontario Conference and the No. 1 pitcher in the nation last year.
