Dziedziejko takes weekly honours
Player of the Week, Week 15 Honours
By BOB ELLIOTT For SLAM! Canadian Baseball
It's easy to spell Dziedziejko.
It's spelled D-z-i-e-d-z-i-e-j-k-o.
Let's just say it's about as easy to spell as Los Angeles Dodgers' infielder Mark Grudzielanek or Texas Rangers' relievers Justin Duchscherer or Brandon Villafuerte.
It's so difficult to spell ... well let's just say it is easier for someone to spell Dziedziejko than for a college pitcher to get Craig Dziedziejko out.
Can you imagine that name spread across the back of a jersey? Well, like famed Cincinnati Reds slugger Ted Kluszewski before him Dziedziejko has the framework to support such lettering.
Dziedziejko is 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds and every ounce was swinging for the fences as the Marshall Thundering Herd clubbed the Miami RedHawks.
The lean, mean hitting machine Dziedziejko (junior, Kitchener, Ont.), is our SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week, narrowly edging right fielder Omari Briscoe (junior, Mississauga, Ont.) of the Ohio Bobcats and second baseman Vincent Ircandia (freshman, Calgary, Alta.) of the Niagara Purples Eagles.
Dziedziejko had Marshall runners scoring in a Herd knocking in 15 runs in five games and he hit four doubles and three homers, going 11-for-20 (.550) with six runs scored. So, Dziedziejko is recognized as the best of the 539 Canadians playing south of the border.
What Dziedziejko and Marshall did as the D-Zee Man -- if it works for Gee-Man Grudzielanek, it will work for Dziedziejko -- to win the honour as Dziedziejko:
Doubled in a run in the Marshall Thundering Herd's 16-6 loss to the Miami RedHawks before 128 fans at University Heights in Huntington, W. Va. D-Zee had an RBI double to left centre in third. Shortstop Mike Koitsopoulos (sophomore, Markham, Ont.) had two singles and drove in a run for the Herd. Catcher Mike Galloway (junior, St. Thomas, Ont.) homered, his ninth, for Miami. Galloway also had two singles and drove in a pair of runs.
Drove in four runs in an 11-5 win over Miami in game one of the doubleheader. D-Zee hit a two-ru double to left in the seven-run first and hit a two-run double down the left-field line in the three-run third inning. For D-Zee it gave him 12 doubles on the season. Koitsopolous singled for the Herd. Galloway hit a solo homer, his 10th, for Miami.
Homered twice and drove in three runs as Marshall lost the nitecap 13-10 in 10 innings before 159 fans in the second game of the doubleheader. D-Zee hit a two-run homer to left field in the first, singled to left in the third, reached on an error in the sixth and hit a three-run homer to right in the ninth. Koitsopolous singled twice and knocked in a run. Meanwhile, Galloway had a day and a half himself with five RBIs for Miami. Galloway, a former SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week, hit his 13th double of the season, singled twice and stole two bases.
Knocked in one run in a 6-5 victory over Miami to split the four-game series before 127 fans. D-Zee doubled in the first, his 13th, to knock in a run. Koitsopolous also added a single and stole his fourth base of the season.
Knocked in four runs and homered as Marshall beat the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 20-10 before 105 fans at Huntington. For Dziezeiejko it was his fourth homer. Koitsopoulos had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Dziedziejko is in his first year at Marshall, transferring from the Pratt Community College Beavers, where in 2000 he was named freshman of the year, in the Jayhawk West Conference. He played in the Jayhawk all-star game in Wichita, Kan.
Before heading south Dziedziejko played for the Waterloo Tigers, the Ontario Blue Jays and the Welland Renegades.
