MacMurdo skates to Canada Games gold

    By SUN STAFF
CORNER BROOK, Nfld. -- Nepean's Matt MacMurdo won the novice men's figure skating gold medal at the Canada Winter Games yesterday, completing a sweep of the golds for Ottawa-area men.
On Wednesday, Damien Mainprize of Almonte won the pre-novice men's championship at the Games.
The gold medal was a great way for MacMurdo to end his competitive season, after his fourth-place finish at the Canadian championships in Ottawa last month.
At that competition, he was second after the short program, but dropped out of the medals in the free skate.
This time, he atoned for that by collecting the Games gold. MacMurdo had led the competition going into yesterday's free skate following a close short program on Wednesday. All of the top four in the short program skated virtually flawless programs.
Keegan Murphy of Squamish, B.C., moved up from fourth place after the short program to claim the silver. Shawn Sawyer, 14, of Edmunston, N.B., was the bronze medallist, dropping a spot after his second-place finish in the short program.
