Americans open luge season with wins

SIGULDA, Latvia (AP) -- Cammy Myler and the doubles team of Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin opened the Olympic luge season Saturday with World Cup victories for the United States.
In the process, Myler, along with the doubles team of Chris Thorpe and Gordy Sheer grabbed three of the 10 U.S. Olympic team spots.
Myler, a three-time Olympian who pre-qualified for the Nagano Olympics with her results last year, needed a top six finish in a World Cup event to make the 1998 Olympics.
She posted times of 44.023 and 43.947 seconds for a total of 1 minute, 27.970 seconds, to beat out 1994 Olympic gold medalist Gerda Weissensteiner of Italy and German Sonja Weidemann.
In the doubles, Grimmette and Martin beat out defending Olympic champions Kurt Brugger and Wilfried Huber of Italy. Thorpe, of Marquette, Mich. and Sheer, of Croton, N.Y.
The third-place effort sent them to Nagano because they were pre-qualified entering the season.
