Ode to hockey misses the rim

By MIKE RUTSEY -- Toronto Sun
     THE RINK
     Stories From Hockey's Home Towns
     Chris Cuthbert and Scott Russell
     Penguin Canada, $32.00

In some respects I believe my appreciation of this effort is lowered due to the fact I read it just after reading To The Hoop.

In some ways Cuthbert and Russell attempted to score the same range of feelings and passion that Berkow exhibited so precisely in his ode to basketball. They just didn't do it as well.

Hockey takes such a strong hold on Canadians and that feeling is amplified in the smaller cities and towns across the land. The authors have tapped into some of that sentiment.

In many respects the arenas in question have become the souls of the communities involved.

There's no doubt the subject matter and intent of the book is a good one. I just wish I hadn't read Berkow first.
