Russians capture pairs gold, Canadians fourth, 10thNICE, France (CP) -- Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov of Russia won the pairs event at the world figure skating championships Wednesday.
Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao of China finished second.
Sarah Abitbol and Stephane Bernadis of France were third. Benardis was cut by an unknown assailant in his hotel room Tuesday and needed several stitches to close a wound.
Canadian champions Jamie Sale of Red Deer, Alta., and David Pelletier of Sayabec, Que., finished fourth.
Kristy Sargeant of Alix, Alta., and Kris Wirtz of Marathon, Ont., finished 10th despite stopping 40 seconds into their program and restarting. They'd become unglued after witnessing a terrible fall by the skaters who preceded them. Ukrainian Dmitri Palamarchuk collapsed after being helped off the ice -- he'd struck his head -- and was taken to hospital for overnight observation.
Sale and Pelletier skated last, and the others had made enough mistakes to leave room for them to win. But Sale stepped out of the landing of one of her solo jumps and she popped out of two others, too, and the door of opportunity slammed shut.
