Stojko, Brunet named Canadian athletes of year

TORONTO (CP) -- Figure skater Elvis Stojko and canoeist Caroline Brunet were named athletes of the year Wednesday at the Canadian Sport Awards.
Stojko, of Richmond Hill, Ont., won the world championship in March 1997 and took the silver medal at the recent Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
Brunet, of Lac Beauport, Que., won three gold medals at the world paddling championships in Dartmouth, N.S., in August. She also won a silver medal at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
The national women's hockey team was named outstanding female team after winning the world championship. The team also brought home a silver medal from the Nagano Olympics.
The outstanding pair of the year award went to rowers Alison Korn of Nepean, Ont., and Emma Robinson of Winnipeg. The pair won a gold medal at the world championships last summer.
The junior athletes of the year were racquetball player Lisa Kerr of Saskatoon and hockey goalie Marc Denis of Montreal.
Kerr, 17, made racquetball history last December by winning gold medals in both the 16- and 18-and-under singles events at the world junior championships in Los Angeles.
Denis, 20, helped the national junior team win its fifth consecutive world championship in January 1997.
