Canadian duo second after short program at world juniors

ZAGREB, Croatia (CP) -- Jacinthe Lariviere of Princeville, Que., and Lenny Faustino of Woodbridge, Ont., were third after the pairs short program Monday at the world junior figure skating championships.
The duo won silver at September's Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany and placed seventh at last year's juniors in Saint John, N.B.
Reigning champions Yulia Obertas and Dmitry Palamarchuk of Ukraine were first, while Laura Handy and Paul Binnebose of the U.S. were second.
In men's qualifying, Ilia Klimkin of Russia recovered from a foiled attempt at a triple axel with an impressive quadruple toe-loop to take first place with seeming ease in Group B. Xiaoou Hu of China was the only other skater to produce a quadruple jump.
Thirty competitors, from a field of 42, made it into the short program to be held today. The best 24 will then advance to the free program and a shot at the title on Thursday.
The pairs title will be decided Wednesday after the free skate. The dance compulsory is scheduled for today.
