    Canadians struggle at international meet

CHEMNITZ, Germany (CP) -- Jeffrey Buttle of Barrie, Ont., was the top Canadian at the Pokal der Blauen Schwerter international junior figure skating event Thursday, finishing sixth out of a field of 20.
Buttle, 16, was third after the short program but struggled to an eighth-place finish in the long program.
"I didn't have as good a skate as I would have liked," Buttle said. "I fell on my last triple lutz and on my triple flip, but I guess those things happen."
Carl Des Rosiers of Greenfield Park, Que., slipped to 10th after being tied for fourth in the short.
"I'm a little disappointed in what I did," Des Rosiers said. "My warmup was great, in fact it was very good, but when I skated my program, I missed my lutz, loop and flip."
Vincent Restencourt of France took the gold medal. Stefan Lindemann of Germany finished second, and Scott Smith of the U.S. was third.
The women's long program is today, with Marie Laurier, the Canadian junior champion from Ile-Bizard, Que., eighth after the short program.
