Russian youngster lands quad en route to win

SOFIA, Bulgaria (CP) -- Russian skater Ilia Klimkin landed a quadruple toe loop en route to a gold medal Saturday at the Sofia Cup, an international junior figure skating competition.
Klimkin was first in both the short and long programs.
Blair Smith of Brantford, Ont., landed four triples to finish eighth in the long program and ninth overall.
"I feel I had a good week skating," said Smith. "Unfortunately I made some mistakes on the jumps in my short program."
Canada wasn't represented in the women's event because of an injury to Stefanie Partridge of Marmora, Ont.
