Ring of intrigue in WWF shows

By GLENN COLE -- Toronto Sun
If there is one thing the WWF is doing better than the WCW right now, it's developing its plot lines.

The WCW has been bogged down in the whole NWO routine with little in the way of creative movement. In addition, the WCW has a huge talent roster and many on it seldom get the TV time they need to develop their popularity.

On the other side, the WWF has advanced the whole corporate theme, now pitting Vince McMahon against his son, Shane, with potential twists and plots that could have anyone and everyone involved.

It makes the WWF's shows more intriguing to watch, which is why it is trouncing WCW in the weekly TV ratings.

NEW CHAMP CROWNED: Diamond Dallas Page, who was booed when he wrestled at the Air Canada Centre a couple of weeks back, is the new WCW heavyweight champion ... Steve Austin and Paul Wight team to battle The Rock and Triple-H at the SkyDome on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ... Veteran grappler Davey Boy Smith is in hospital in Calgary with a serious infection in his back and plans to fight his dismissal from WCW ... The Godfather is the new WWF Intercontinental title-holder, a much better fit than Goldust ... Chris Benoit has a three-year contract with WCW, but keeps telling people how unhappy he is ... Sean Stasiak, son of Stan Stasiak, is working with the WWF and expect to see more of U.S. Olympian Kurt Angle soon ... Pierre-Carl Ouelette should be returning to the WWF soon after recovering from a knee injury ... As expected, the Brood (Gangrel, Edge, Christian) has split from the Undertaker's ministry ... WSBK will be picking up ECW's weekly program soon, but Sid Eudy apparently has quit the group. ECW's biggest stars are Sunny, Rob van Dam, Sabu and Shane Douglas.

TROOP MOVEMENTS: John Tenta won't be carrying around a Cartman doll in the WWF show at the SkyDome next Friday night or anywhere else. That's because he has been dropped from the WWF roster along with the Blue Meanie (no loss) and Gillberg. Meanwhile, Giant Gonzalez and Kurrgan are plying their trade in Mexico.

HERE AND THERE: More independents groups are popping up in southern Ontario with many familiar names on their cards. The lone show this weekend is a CWA event at McCormick Arena, 66 Sheridan Rd. set for 2 p.m. tomorrow. Ricky (Soulman) Johnson, Portuguese star Eduard Pavao, Joe E. Legend and Scott d'Amore are on the card. Fans are asked to bring along a non-perishable food item for The Daily Food Bank ... In London next Friday at the Medway Arena, Hardcore Wrestling has the Iron Shiek against The Brooklyn Brawler, Doink the Clown battling Jason the 13th and Bastion Booger grappling with Dangerous Danny Steele. Nikolai Volkoff and the Honky Tonk Man also are on the card ... On April 30, there will be a card in Thornhill as the TTWF has WWF stars Test (Andrew Martin) vs. Edge (Adam Copeland) in a show at the Garnet A. Williams Community Centre, 501 Clarke Ave. West. Legend, d'Amore, Pretty Boy Simms and Larry Destiny also will be on the card ... Simms is the matchmaker and will wrestle on a card the next night in Welland at Roseville Hall, 310 Riverside Dr. The Brooklyn Brawler, Doink the Clown, Simms, The Bruiser and Dangerous Derek Wylde also are on the card ... AWF goes to St. Catharines May 2 at the CAW Hall, 124 Bunting Road. Bell time is 4 p.m. with Jimmy (Superfly) Snuka vs. Tony Atlas and new AWF champion Lightning Jim Fury among those on the card. On the same day at 2:30 p.m. at the Oshawa Civic Centre, the ICW's show has Greg Valentine, Brian Nobbs, Chainz, Typhoon, Duke (The Dumpster) Droese and Tom Brandi on its card.
