Bring back the Weasel!

By ANDREW FERGUSON -- For SLAM! Wrestling

Yes, I know. I too have read countless editorials on WCW and why they currently are lagging far behind their northern counterpart. I've heard all the arguments from Hulk Hogan dominates the booking to the young guys deserve a push to Eric Bishcoff's an egomaniac and that no one can understand Sid when he talks during an interview.

Okay. Maybe that last one is just a pet peeve of mine.

However, I believe, that WCW was doomed to failure the night that the nWo first appeared at Bash at the Beach in 1996. Now before everyone starts yelling and screaming that the nWo was the best thing since sliced bread, calm down. You're right it was. The failure I am talking about is not the nWo. The failure I am talking about is BOBBY HEENAN.

You see, the night the nWo debuted Bobby Heenan stopped being a "heel" announcer. He immediately sided with WCW to help fend off these invaders from the "North". And that's what's been missing from WCW television from that day to this.... a heel announcer.

Heel announcers provide an important function on WWF television. Think about it. If Jerry Lawler likes a wrestler (or promoter for that matter) we know that we should be booing that character. Lawler does this to perfection sometimes even justifying why he all of a sudden now understands the actions of certain wrestlers. Lawler hated Bret Hart but saw his point of view during the USA - Canada angle and Jerry was right there with Vinnie Mac when McMahon turned on Austin.

This brings me back to Bobby Heenan. He was one of the best bad-guy announcers ever but when he stated that Sting and Luger were heroes and that the nWo were evil, he changed WCW forever. Now WCW has no one to help the fans follow the storylines. Even to this day Heenan has not recovered. He should be bad-mouthing Goldberg and telling us how great Sid is. He does the opposite. He screams "da Man!" every time he sees Goldberg. It's sad. Heenan is just a shell of the once great commentator he was.

WCW should do one simple thing to help their storylines and in turn improve their television programs...bring back the heel announcer and lose the buffoon. WCW already has plenty of those but that's a story for another day.
