Thursday, April 2, 1998Stop those knivesLONDON (AP) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Thursday welcomed a move by FIFA -- the governing body of world soccer -- to halt the sale of souvenir knives at this summer's World Cup in France."Clearly the action taken by FIFA is very welcome and the prime minister has paid tribute to the work of (sports minister) Tony Banks in making this an issue," a Blair spokesman said. FIFA said manufacture of the knives had stopped and added it was working to remove them from the market. FIFA officials said they were unaware the knives were being produced under a license granted by FIFA until it was brought to their attention by Banks and British Home Secretary Jack Straw.
