Thursday, December 18, 1997Sammer hopes to be at the World Cup despite new health problemsFRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Matthias Sammer, the ailing sweeper of the German national team, says he hopes to be at the World Cup in France despite new health problems.In an interview with the magazine Kicker published Thursday, Sammer confirmed that he was suffering from the hyperactivity of the thyroid gland and taking medication to fight the problem. The Bild newspaper also said Sammer had developed kidney problems, possibly as a result of anesthesia during his knee operations. Sammer, 30, Europe's Player of the Year last season, had his fifth left-knee operation Oct. 6, only to have surgery days later to treat a bacterial infection.
