WC in 2006 would be a windfall
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Germany's economy would reap benefits worth about five billion
marks ($4 billion Cdn) if the country gets to stage the World Cup in 2006, according to a study
released Thursday.
German soccer officials say the results of the study by the University of Paderborn will
bolster the already high public support for Germany's bid. The study was commissioned by the German
Soccer Federation.
"The World Cup would be profitable to everyone and would strongly benefit Germany's
economy," said Wolfgang Weber, one of the seven scientists who conducted the study.
Germany and England are battling to become Europe's candidate to stage the
event.
