Effenberg signs three-year contract with Bayern Munich

MUNICH (AP) -- Stefan Effenberg, the former German international who was kicked off the national team during the 1994 World Cup, signed a three-year contract today with Bayern Munich.
Financial details of his transfer deal from Borussia Moenchengladbach were not disclosed. German media estimate Effenberg will be making at least five million marks ($4 million Cdn) a season.
Effenberg, a 29-year-old midfielder, played for Bayern Munich between 1990 and 1992, when he moved to Italy.
He then returned to Borussia Moenchengladbach and played a major role in preventing the team from sliding into the second division in the just concluded season.
Considered one of the most talented German players, Effenberg was sent home from the 1994 World Cup in the United States for making an obscene gesture at German fans during a game.
Coach Berti Vogts has vowed that Effenberg will never play again for the national team while he is coach and Effenberg was not named in the 22-man squad for next months's World Cup in France.
