Thursday, May 21, 1998Baggio, Bergomi picked for Italy teamIn a surprising decision, Maldini also picked 34-year-old defender Giuseppe Bergomi. Maldini, coaching in the World Cup for the first time, bypassed forwards Gianfranco Zola and PierLuigi Casiraghi. Juventus of Turin forward Alessandro Del Piero, who strained his right thigh in Wednesday's European Champions Cup final, was not immediately included in the list, pending medical examinations. But Maldini said Del Piero could be added to the roster before it is submitted to FIFA on June 2. Other surprise selections were midfielder Sandro Cois of Fiorentina and defender Gianluca Pessotto of Juventus. Baggio, 31, was a star as Italy finished second in the 1994 World Cup, has played just one game with the national team since. He scored a career-high 22 goals this season for Bologna, finishing third in the Italian League scoring race, and has 25 goals in 46 international games. Bergomi, appearing in his fourth World Cup, plays for Internazionale of Milan. He has six goals in 77 games with the national team but hasn't played for Italy since 1991. Maldini, whose son Paolo is Italy's captain, replaced Arrigo Sacchi as coach following the 1996 European Championship.
