Thursday, May 21, 1998South Africa is off to FranceJOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) -- Fans gave South Africa's soccer team a noisy farewell Thursday as it began left for its first World Cup.The South African team, coming off a 1-1 tie Wednesday night against Zambia, departed for Argentina, where it will play an exhibition game Monday. "This is the greatest moment for South Africa as it will be the first time this country will be participating in the World Cup," coach Philippe Troussier told the crowd at the airport. "It is also significant that it will be the last World Cup tournament this century. I promise we will do our best in France as we carry with us the pride of this nation."
