Friday, October 10, 1997China beats Kuwait 2-1KUWAIT (AP) -- China moved back into contention for a spot in the World Cup, winning 2-1 Friday night on Gao Feng's goal with one minute remaining.Hao Haidong had put China ahead in the third minute, but Jassem al-Huwaidi tied the score in the 25th. Iran (2-0-2) leads Group B of Asia's second round with eight points, followed by China (2-1-1) with seven and Kuwait (1-2-1) and Saudi Arabia (1-1-1) with four apiece. Qatar (0-2-1) is last with one point. The top team in each group qualifies for the 32-team tournament in France next summer, and the second-place teams advance to a playoff. The playoff winner also qualifies, and the loser play Australia in a home-and-home series for a spot in the tournament.
