*Red Sox sign free agent OF Marty Cordova*
    ------------------------------------------

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Unwanted in Minnesota, former American League
Rookie of the Year Marty Cordova today agreed to a deal with the
    Boston Red Sox.

    Terms were not disclosed.

Cordova made $3 million last season, close to one-fifth of the
Twins' total payroll of $15.8 million. The financially-strapped
Twins shopped Cordova during the season but were unable to trade
    him.

The 30-year-old Cordova led the Twins with 70 RBI last season
and finished with a .288 average, 14 homers and 13 stolen bases.

"The acquisition of Marty Cordova gives our ballclub additional
offensive power and depth in our outfield," Red Sox general
manager Dan Duquette said. "Marty is a former Rookie of the Year
and has matured into a solid major leaguer as he was a top
offensive leader for the Twins last season. He also will be a
dependable defensive asset for our club."

Cordova was AL Rookie of the Year in 1995, batting .277 with 24
homers and 84 RBI. The following season he batted .309 and
    drove in a career-best 111 runs.

In five major league seasons, Cordova is a .277 career hitter
with 79 homers and 385 RBI.
