*Indians place LF-DH Cordero on 60-day DL with broken wrist*
    ------------------------------------------------------------

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Cleveland Indians outfielder-designated
hitter Wil Cordero will undergo surgery today to repair a broken
left wrist and will be sidelined at least two months.

Cordero, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list this
afternoon, fractured the radius bone in his wrist in two places
while making a sliding catch on a shallow fly ball to left field
in the sixth inning of Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee
    Brewers.

The Indians today also recalled outfielder Jacob Cruz and
purchased the contract of infielder Jeff Manto from Triple-A
Buffalo of the International League to help compensate for the
loss of Cordero. Infielder Jolbert Cabrera was optioned to
    Buffalo.

The Indians already are without injured catcher Sandy Alomar and
third baseman Travis Fryman. Major league RBI leader Manny
Ramirez is also out while serving a three-game suspension,
stemming from a brawl with Detroit on May 22.

Cordero had missed 13 games this season with a bruised right
wrist and right heel. He went 1-for-2 Tuesday and is batting
.316 with five homers and 26 RBI for baseball's most potent
    offense.

"Wil stepped up from the minute he's put on an Indians' uniform
and hit for us," said Indians general manager John Hart. "He had
found a nice spot in the six hole, hitting in the middle of the
lineup. I feel bad for him and I feel bad for the club."

Richie Sexson likely will be given an expanded role in the
outfield in Cordero's absence. Sexson is mired in an 0-for-24
slump, after striking out twice and bouncing into a pair of
    double plays Tuesday night.

Cruz was hitting .278 with seven homers and 28 RBI in 46 games
for Buffalo. He began the year on the 15-day disabled list
after straining his right oblique muscle in spring training and
was later activated and optioned to Buffalo on April 29.

Manto was hitting .322 with 16 homers and 34 RBI in 48 games for
Buffalo. He led the International League in slugging percentage
(.698) and was second in home runs. This marks the third
straight year he has appeared in an Indians uniform.

The Indians own the best record in baseball at 36-20, and lead
the major leagues in runs scored with 365.

Cordero signed a one-year deal with the four-time defending
American League Central Division champions on February 3 after
seven troubling seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Boston and
    Montreal.

The 27-year-old was released by Boston after the 1997 campaign
and later pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting his wife. He
avoided jail time as part of an agreement with Massachusetts
    authorities.

The native of Puerto Rico signed with the White Sox shortly
before last season and homered in his first at-bat. Cordero
played 96 games for Chicago, hitting .267 with 13 home runs and
    49 RBI.

He became a free agent when Chicago failed to pick up his $2
    million option.

Cordero, who has split time between left field and designated
hitter, played winter ball for Mayaguez in the Puerto Rican
League and hit .333 (32-for-96) with six homers and 23 RBI in 26
    games.

An All-Star in 1994 with the Expos, Cordero appeared in 140
games for the Red Sox in 1997 and batted .281 with career highs
in homers (18) and RBI (72). He hit .294 with 15 homers and 63
RBI for the Expos in 1994.
