BASEBALL NOTEThursday, May 20, 1:21 AM(UPDATING WITH ROSE START) *Red Sox RHP Kip Gross placed on 15-day DL with broken finger* -------------------------------------------------------------- BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox today placed righthander Kip Gross on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand. To take Gross' roster spot, Boston recalled righthander Brian Rose, who tossed seven scoreless innings in tonight's 6-0 victory over the New York Yankees to earn his second career win. "I'm pitching my best when I'm not trying to overpower people, using my control, rather than my speed," Rose said. "I threw a lot of changeups tonight. I tried to keep them off their front foot. I think I did that." Rose, 23, scattered six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He posted a 2-1 record with a 2.57 ERA in five starts at Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League before being promoted. Rose went 1-4 with a 6.93 ERA in eight appearances for the Red Sox last season, allowing 29 earned runs and 43 hits over 37 2/3 innings. He earned his only previous career win with an 11-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on April 21. The 34-year-old Gross is 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA in 11 appearances for the Red Sox this season, giving up 11 runs and 15 hits over 12 2/3 innings. He spent the last four seasons with the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese Pacific League, compiling a 55-49 record. Gross also pitched in the major leagues from 1990-92 for Cincinnati and Los Angeles. American League Stats | National League Stats | Baseball | Slam! |
