BASEBALL NOTEFriday, June 26, 3:50 PM*Clemente's widow, Lee MacPhail named honorary captains* --------------------------------------------------------- Vera Clemente, widow of Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente, and 1998 Hall of Fame inductee Lee MacPhail today were named honorary captains for this year's All-Star Game to be played July 7th in Denver. Clemente, the executive director of the Roberto Clemente Sports City which helps underprivileged children in Puerto Rico, was named to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her late husband's induction into the Hall of Fame. After registering his 3,000th hit in the final game of the 1972 season, Roberto Clemente was killed on New Year's Eve when his plane carrying supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed. Clemente, a 12-time All-Star who spent 18 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, compiled a .317 average with 240 homers and 1,305 RBI. MacPhail, a baseball executive for 45 years, is the son of former Dodger and Yankee front office executive Larry MacPhail. He will follow in his father's footsteps on July 26th when he is inducted into the Hall of Fame. The MacPhails will become the first father/son tandem enshrined in Cooperstown. MacPhail began his major league career in 1947 as director of player personnel for the Yankees. He also served as general manager of the Baltimore Orioles, before replacing Joe Cronin as American League president in 1974. American League Stats | National League Stats | Baseball | Slam! |
