BASEBALL NOTEWednesday, November 19, 2:01 AM(FIXING TYPOS IN 5TH GRAF) *Diamondbacks get 3B Fryman from Tigers, OF White from Marlins# --------------------------------------------------------------- The Arizona Diamondbacks added another veteran to the left side of their infield tonight, acquiring third baseman Travis Fryman from the Detroit Tigers. Fryman, who has driven in over 100 runs each of the last two seasons, was obtained from Detroit for infielders Joe Randa and Gabe Alvarez and pitcher Matt Drews, all of whom were taken in today's expansion draft at Phoenix. The acquisition of Fryman was one of four deals announced by the Diamondbacks after the conclusion of the draft. Arizona also obtained outfielder Devon White from the Florida Marlins for pitcher Jesus Martinez, who was taken from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the draft. Outfielder Harvey Pulliam was acquired from the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Chuck McElroy, Arizona's sixth choice in the third round from the Chicago White Sox. The Diamondbacks also returned pitcher Scott Winchester, their third pick in the second round, to the Cincinnati Reds as the player to be named in last week's Felix Rodriguez trade. Fryman comes to the Diamondbacks with a price tag of $6.5 million, which represents what he will paid next season in the final year of a contract signed in 1994. The trade comes one day after the Diamondbacks signed free agent shortstop Jay Bell to a five-year, $35 million contract. The 28-year-old Fryman leaves the Tigers after eight seasons in which he collected 1,176 hits, 149 home runs and 679 RBI. He batted .274 this past season with 22 homers and 102 RBI. "Travis Fryman has been a consummate professional and a great Detroit Tiger for the last eight seasons," said Tigers general manager Randy Smith. "He has certainly meant a great deal to this organization and its fans for a long time, and we would like to thank him for his hard work and his unquestionable dedication." The Diamondbacks reportedly were interested in acquiring third baseman Matt Williams from Cleveland, then turned their attention to Fryman when a deal could not be completed. Replacing Fryman at third base for Detroit likely will be the productive and less expensive Randa, who hit .302 with seven homers and 60 RBI for the Pirates in 1997, his second full year in the majors. The 27-year-old made just $200,000 last season. The 23-year-old Alvarez was the fifth overall choice in the expansion draft from the San Diego Padres. Drews essentially was returned to the Tigers after being taken in the second round. The 34-year-old White batted .245 with six homers and 34 RBI for the Marlins this season. White, who hit .242 in the World Series win over the Cleveland Indians, is entering the final year of a three-year contract that will pay him $3.5 million next season. White, a two-time All-Star, has a .260 career average in 1,488 games for California, Toronto and Florida. Martinez, a 23-year-old left-hander, posted a 7-1 record with a 6.21 ERA for Triple-A Albuquerque. He is the younger brother of major league pitchers Pedro and Ramon. Pedro, the 1997 Cy Young Award winner, also was traded tonight, moving from Montreal to Boston. The financially strapped Marlins also shipped closer Robb Nen to San Francisco tonight, one week after dealing outfielder Moises Alou to Houston.
