*Mookie Wilson, Cookie Rojas among Mets' coaches for 1997*
----------------------------------------------------------

Mookie Wilson, part of one of the most memorable plays in New
York Mets history, today was among the coaches named by the team
for the 1997 season.

The 40-year-old Wilson was named base running/outfield/first
base coach after serving as roving instructor for the Mets'
seven minor league teams the last three years. It was 10 years
ago in Game Six of the World Series that Wilson hit a ground
ball that went through the legs of Boston Red Six first baseman
Bill Buckner, allowing the winning run to score. The Mets then
won the series in seven games.

General Manager Joe McIlvaine and manager Bobby Valentine also
announced that the 1997 staff will include pitching coach Bob
Apodaca, assistant pitching coach/bullpen coach Randy Niemann,
catchers coach Bruce Benedict, infield/third base coach Cookie
Rojas and hitting coach Tom Robson.

Apodaca was pitching coach at Triple-A Norfolk before being
promoted August 26th when Valentine replaced the fired Dallas
Green as manager. Niemann and Benedict also worked in the Mets'
minor league system last season.

Rojas has been the third base coach and infield instructor for
the Florida Marlins since 1993.

Robson has spent the last two seasons as hitting coach of the
Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japanese Pacific League.

The Mets also named Scott Lawrenson assistant trainer for the
1997 season.
