*Padres activate CF Finley from disabled list*
----------------------------------------------
The San Diego Padres, who have endured an eight-game losing
streak and are mired in the basement of the National League
West, today regained the services of center fielder Steve
Finley, who was activated off the 15-day disabled list.
Suffering from left elbow soreness, Finley was placed on the
disabled list on April 25th and hasn't played since April 19th.
In his absence, the Padres have dropped 11 of their last 13
games and fallen to 11-17. He went 1-for-4 in tonight's 2-1
loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Finley, who was moved to third in the lineup at the start of the
season, is batting .222 (10-for-45) with a team-leading six
doubles and nine RBI in 12 games this season. He enjoyed a
career-best season for the Padres in 1996 with 30 homers, 95 RBI
and a .298 batting average.
Rickey Henderson, who saw increased playing time in Finley's
absence, is hitting just .164, while starting left fielder Greg
Vaughn is struggling with a .175 batting average.
To make room for Finley, the Padres optioned right-handed
pitcher Marc Kroon to Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League
(AAA). Kroon, who made two appearances with San Diego, had no
record and a 5.00 ERA.
