*F Maurice Evans transfers from Wichita State to Texas*
    -------------------------------------------------------

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- Sophomore forward Maurice Evans, who
finished ninth in the nation in scoring at 22.1 points per game,
today transferred from Wichita State to Texas.

The 6-5 Evans led the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring and
shot 46 percent from the field, including 42 percent from
3-point range. He will sit out the 1999-00 season per NCAA
transfer rules but will be able to practice with the team and
eligible to play in the 2000-01 season. Evans will have two
    years of eligibility remaining.

"Obviously, this is a huge commitment for our basketball
program," said coach Rick Barnes, who guided the Longhorns to an
NCAA Tournament appearance in his first season at Texas.

"Maurice Evans is one of the top players in college basketball.
Having someone of his talents choose to play at the University
of Texas is another step in the right direction for our program.
Maurice is an excellent young man who will do great things at
    Texas."

Evans had 18 20-point games last season and five 30-point
performances. He averaged 12.1 points as a freshman and was
named to the MVC All-Newcomer team. But the Shockers struggled
in Evans' two seasons, going 13-17 this season and 16-15 in his
    freshman campaign.

Texas had inconsistent backcourt play last season despite a
19-13 mark. Returning is starting point guard Ivan Wagner, who
averaged 6.1 points and 3.7 assists and will be aided by fellow
returnees William Clay, Chris McColphin and newcomers Roosevelt
Brown and junior college transfer Lawrence Williams.
