NCAA TOURNAMENT PREVIEW (OKLAHOMA ST-DUKE)
Sunday, March 15, 12:04 PM
No.8 Oklahoma St (22-6) vs. No.1 Duke (30-3) 12:10 pm EST
Second Round South Region Lexington, KY
----------------------------------------------------------------
Top-seed Duke hopes to make its first regional appearance since
1994 today as it battles eighth-seeded Oklahoma State in the
second round of the NCAA Tournament's South Region at Rupp Arena
in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Blue Devils (30-3) had little trouble disposing of Radford
in the first round Friday, rolling to a 99-63 victory over the
Highlanders. Roshown McLeod scored 19 of his 23 points in the
first half as Duke forced almost as many turnovers (18) as it
allowed points in the first half (19).
Duke, which was bounced in the second round last year by
10th-seeded Providence in the Southeast Region, has not been to
the Sweet 16 since 1994, when it lost to Arkansas in the
championship game. The four-year stretch is the longest drought
since 1981-86.
Shooting guard Trajan Langdon was the only player for the Blue
Devils not to score Friday. Chris Carrawell scored 16 points,
while Elton Brand, Mike Chappell and Shane Battier netted 13
each for Duke, which has won 21 of its last 23 games, losing
both to North Carolina.
McLeod leads the team in scoring at 15.2 points per game, while
Langdon (14.7 ppg), Brand (13.7 ppg) and Carrawell (10.0) all
contribute in double figures. The Blue Devils led the Atlantic
Coast Conference in scoring at 85.6 points per game and also
forced a conference-best 20.3 turnovers per game.
Oklahoma State (22-6) shut down ninth seed George Washington,
74-58, Friday. Adrian Peterson scored six of his 23 points in a
key second-half run for the Cowboys, who are in the NCAA
Tournament for the first time since 1995, when they reached the
Final Four.
A matchup that will likely dictate the outcome of the game will
be at the point guard, where Doug Gottlieb takes on Duke's Steve
Wojciechowski. Gottlieb had just three points and five assists
Friday while trying to contain 5-4 Shawnta Rogers. Wojciechowski
had three points and six assists in 19 minutes.
Oklahoma State led the Big 12 in scoring defense, holding
opponents to 69.3 points per game. The Cowboys were also third
in scoring at 79.3 points per game and shot 46.8 percent from
the field.
The Cowboys won the only game between the schools, a 51-41
victory in 1940. They played one common opponent this season --
Missouri. Duke recorded an 82-59 victory over the Tigers at the
Maui Invitational, while Oklahoma State suffered a six-point
setback at Missouri.
The winner of this game will play the winner of the New
Mexico-Syracuse game in the regional semifinals Friday at St.
Petersburg, Florida.
