COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEFriday, June 2, 4:59 PM*Don Brown named football coach at Northeastern* ------------------------------------------------ BOSTON (Ticker) -- Don Brown, the defensive coordinator at the University of Massachusetts the past two seasons, today was named football coach at Northeastern University. Brown, 44, takes over for Barry Gallup, who left to become director of football operations at Boston College. "Don has been highly successful at every stop during his coaching career," Northeastern athletic director Ian McDaw said. "He is an outstanding technical coach, a superior motivator and a dynmaic recruiter. Moreover, I'm confident that his strong interpersonal skills and straightforward approach will also endear him to Husky fans and the campus community." He takes over a program that went 2-9 in 1999 and compiled a 38-60-1 record in nine seasons under Gallup. At Massachusetts, Brown was the righthand man to coach Mark Whipple, who orchestrated one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Division I-AA history, taking a team that went 2-9 in 1997 and guiding it to a 12-3 mark and the 1998 national championship. Before going to Massachusetts in 1998, Brown spent two years as defensive coordinator at Brown University. The Bears were 7-3 in his second year with the team, matching their best record in 20 years. Brown was head coach at Plymouth State College from 1993 to 19995 and posted a 25-6 record. Brown was named Freedom Football Conference Coach of the Year all three seasons. st 06-02-00 16:53 et |
