NCAA FOOTBALL PREVIEW (GEORGIA TECH-GEORGIA)
Saturday, November 25, 6:26 AM
No.19 Georgia Tech (8-2) at No.18 Georgia (7-3) 12:00 pm EST
----------------------------------------------------------------
ATHENS, Georgia (Ticker) -- No.19 Georgia Tech seeks its longest
winning streak in a decade when it visits No. 18 Georgia in a
game that has bowl implications for these two teams and for
several others.
Georgia Tech (8-2) has won six straight games, its longest since
capturing the final four games of 1989 and the first five of
1990 en route to a national title. The school last won seven
straight in a single season in 1978.
The Yellow Jackets won the 600th game in school history last
week as Joe Burns ran for two touchdowns in a 35-22 decision
over Maryland.
While Georgia Tech finished in a second-place tie with Clemson
in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Gator Bowl has already
offered a bid to Clemson. That leaves Georgia Tech to
stay home and play in the Peach Bowl.
Georgia (8-2), which could be headed to the Music City Bowl,
snapped a two-game losing streak with a 32-14 win over
Mississippi as freshman Musa Smith rushed for a career-high 144
yards.
Bulldogs quarterback Quincy Carter will miss his third straight
game this week due to a thumb injury, and he has been missed.
Cory Phillips completed just 9-of-17 passes for 107 yards and
two interceptions last week.
A key matchup today has red-hot Yellow Jackets quarterback
George Godsey facing a Georgia defense that has at least two
interceptions in seven straight games. Godsey has averaged
377.0 passing yards over the last three games.
The game has implications for Florida State, which is trying to
hold off Miami and remain second in the Bowl Championship Series
ratings. A win by Georgia Tech, which Florida State defeated
earlier this season, can help the Seminoles in terms of strength
of schedule.
Last year's game, won by Georgia Tech, 51-48, in overtime, was
one of the more controversial of the entire season.
The Bulldogs were on the verge of winning in regulation before
Jasper Sanks fumbled at the Yellow Jackets 1-yard line in the
fourth quarter. Sanks appeared to be fully down when he fumbled,
but the play went in favor of the Yellow Jackets, who ran out
the clock and forced overtime.
Georgia Tech has won the last two meetings to snap a seven-game
winning streak by Georgia. The last five games have been decided
by a total of 18 points.
