NCAA FOOTBALL PREVIEW (GEORGIA-GEORGIA TECH)
Saturday, November 24, 7:35 AM
No.23 Georgia (6-3) at No.19 Georgia Tech (7-3) 7:45 pm EST
----------------------------------------------------------------
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- No. 19 Georgia Tech seeks its first
four-game winning streak against No. 23 Georgia in more than 40
years on Saturday when the rivals clash for the 86th time.
The Yellow Jackets continued their recent success against the
Bulldogs with a 51-48 overtime victory last season. Georgia Tech
has won three in a row in the series for the first time since
1961-63 and has not won four straight since an eight-game run
from 1949-1956.
Saturday's contest marks the first time since 1940 that Georgia
Tech will not end its regular season against Georgia. The Yellow
Jackets face Florida State on December 1, while Georgia has a
game next week against Houston.
Both teams became bowl eligible with victories last week. The
Yellow Jackets held off Wake Forest, 38-33, and the Bulldogs
defeated Mississippi, 35-15.
Kelly Campbell, Georgia Tech's top receiver, will be back in the
lineup Saturday after missing the last two games with a sprained
ankle. Campbell has caught 45 passes for 599 yards and two
touchdowns this season.
George Godsey, the ACC's top-rated passer, has thrown for 753
yards in the last two games. For the season, he has completed 66
percent of his tosses for 2,361 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Joe Burns ran for 145 yards last week to become the fifth
1,000-yard rusher in school history. He raised his total to
1,038 yards and leads Georgia Tech with 12 touchdowns, 11 on the
ground.
Kelley Rhino set an ACC single-season record for punt return
yards. The 5-7, 170-pound junior has 491 yards, breaking the
previous mark of 488 set by Florida State's Corey Sawyer in
1992. Rhino eclipsed the Georgia Tech record held by his father,
Randy.
Verron Haynes rushed for a career-high 192 yards and two
touchdowns on 26 carries as Georgia snapped a two-game losing
streak with its victory over Mississippi.
Haynes, who more than doubled his previous season total of 170
yards, may have to carry a heavy load against Georgia Tech as
well. Musa Smith, Georgia's leading rusher, missed last week's
game due to lingering affects of a hip flexor and his status is
unknown.
Haynes' total last week was the most for a Georgia running back
since Garrison Hearst ran for 246 yards against Vanderbilt in
1992.
The Bulldogs also will be looking to get their passing game
going again. David Greene completed just 8-of-14 passes for just
93 yards and two interceptions against Mississippi. The eight
completions were the fewest for Georgia since 1990.
"This senior class has not beaten Tech yet, so we want to send
them out on a winning note," Georgia wide receiver Terrence
Edwards said.
But Georgia will be without third-leading rusher Jasper Sanks,
who was dismissed from the team on Wednesday for a violation of
team rules. He rushed for 338 yards and two touchdowns on 84
carries.
Despite Georgia Tech's recent success, Georgia leads the
all-time series, 52-38-5. The teams have played every year since
1925.
