NCAA FOOTBALL PREVIEW (WESTERN MICH-MICHIGAN)
Saturday, September 22, 6:25 AM
Western Mich (1-1) at No.17 Michigan (1-1) 12:10 pm EDT
---------------------------------------------------------------
ANN ARBOR, Michigan (Ticker) -- Western Michigan, not Illinois,
will provide the opposition for No. 17 Michigan on Saturday.
Last week's game between the schools was postponed in the wake
of the terrorist attacks and rescheduled for this weekend.
Michigan was scheduled to play Illinois, but that game has
been pushed back to September 29.
Increased security is expected at 107,000-seat Michigan
Stadium, the largest facility in college football.
Michigan will try to move ahead or at least keep pace with Yale
in a chase to become the winningest program in college football
history.
The Wolverines have a record of 806-226-36 in 122 seasons, while
Division I-AA Yale, which hosts Cornell, is 806-301-55 in 128
seasons.
Michigan missed a chance to become No. 1 two weeks ago,
suffering a 23-18 loss to Washington. Yale's season opener with
Towson was canceled.
Michigan's Marquise Walker caught a school-record 15 passes for
159 yards and two touchdowns against the Huskies and also
blocked a punt that went out of the end zone for a safety.
Walker became the 11th Michigan player with 100 career
receptions.
John Navarre has thrown for over 200 yards in both of Michigan's
games this season. He completed a career-best 26-of-44 passes
for 248 yards and two touchdowns against the Huskies.
Lloyd Carr is seeking his 60th victory at Michigan. The
fifth-winningest coach in school history, Carr has a 59-17
record, including a 13-3 mark after losses.
Western Michigan (1-1) opened with a 48-7 victory over Illinois
State then suffered a 31-0 loss to Virginia Tech. The Broncos
totaled just 166 yards and seven first downs against the Hokies.
The Broncos will play back-to-back games against ranked teams
for the first time in school history.
Michigan is 14-0 all-time against Mid-America Conference
members, including a 2-0 mark against Western Michigan. The
Wolverines posted a 57-6 victory in the last meeting between the
schools in 1943.
