NCAA FOOTBALL PREVIEW (KANSAS-NEBRASKA)
Saturday, November 4, 6:37 AM
Kansas (4-4) at No.6 Nebraska (7-1) 3:30 pm EST
-------------------------------------------------------------
LINCOLN, Nebraska (Ticker) -- For Nebraska, the road to
redemption begins today against Kansas, a team it has
defeated 31 straight times.
Sixth-ranked Nebraska had its 13-game winning streak snapped
with a 31-14 loss to Oklahoma, a defeat that damaged but did not
end the national title hopes of the Cornhuskers.
If Nebraska wins its final three games against Kansas, Kansas
State and Colorado, it will be back in the Big 12 Conference
title game, possibly against Oklahoma, and can be back in the
national championship hunt if a few things go its way. While
Nebraska fell to sixth in the coaches' poll, they dropped to
just fourth in the BCS poll.
"The possibilities will be there only if we play our best
football," Nebraska coach Frank Solich said.
The normally solid Nebraska defense was torched for 24 points in
an 11 1/2-minute span of the second quarter in last week's loss
to the Sooners.
Offensively, the Cornhuskers (7-1, 4-1) showed no ability to
play from behind. In an attempt to open up the offense in the
third quarter, Nebraska's Eric Crouch threw a poor pass that was
intercepted and returned 32 yards for a touchdown.
Nebraska has rushed for at least 300 yards seven times this
season, but was held to 195 by the Sooners. This week they
face a Kansas defense that has held opponents under 100 yards
for three straight games for the first time since 1985.
Kansas (4-4, 2-3) if coming off a wild 45-39 loss to Texas Tech
in which Dylen Smith threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns.
Smith has combined for 17 TDs this season -- eight rushing and
nine receiving.
The Jayhawks and Cornhuskers have met every year since 1906, the
longest continuous series in Division I-A. It has been almost a
century of domination for Nebraska, which owns an 82-21-3 edge
and last lost to the Jayhawks in 1968.
Nebraska also will be seeking its 32nd straight homecoming win.
