    (KENT STATE-PURDUE)

    Friday, September 8, 6:30 AM
Kent State (0-1) at No.13 Purdue (1-0) 2:00 pm EDT
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- The schools are fewer than
400 miles apart, but Kent State and 13th-ranked Purdue will be
    meeting for the first time.

Kent State (0-1) has been invited to Ross-Ade Stadium in part to
be statistical fodder for Heisman Trophy candidate Drew Brees
and to serve as another tuneup for next week's meeting with
    Notre Dame.

Brees threw for 318 yards and three scores in a season-opening,
    48-0 win over Central Michigan.

The strong game for Brees was expected, but of even greater
comfort to coach Joe Tiller was the surprisingly strong effort
by his defense, which pitched its first shutout since 1981.
Tiller even allowed his first-string unit to play late into the
    game to build confidence.

"I'm glad coach let us go out there and finish the job,"
defensive tackle Matt Mitrione said. "It's something we have
wanted for a long time. Hopefully, we can put a string of these
    together now."

That is possible against Kent State, a Mid-American Conference
foe that gained just 83 rushing yards on 23 carries last week
against Pittsburgh. Most of the yardage for the Golden Flashes
came from Zach Williams, who threw for 205 yards.

Kent State did show the ability to keep things close in 1999,
taking nationally ranked Marshall into the fourth quarter before
    losing 28-16.

Travis Dorsch has 36 field goals in his career to tie the Purdue
record set by Jonathan Briggs from 1985-87. Dorsch also doubles
    as the Boilermakers' punter.
