  • NCAA FOOTBALL PREVIEW
    (TEXAS TECH-TEXAS A&M)

    Saturday, October 24, 6:33 AM
    No.25 Texas Tech (6-1) at No.10 Texas A&M (5-1) 3:30 pm EDT

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) -- The Big 12 Conference South
Division lead will be up for grabs when 10th-ranked Texas A&M
puts its six-game winning streak on the line against 25th-ranked
    Texas Tech.

The Aggies (6-1, 3-0 Big 12 South) have not lost since falling
to Florida State in the Kickoff Classic in August, save for the
forfeit against Louisiana Tech that does not yet count as a loss
in their record. Now they must break a three-game losing streak
to the Red Raiders (6-1, 3-1 South) if they hope to remain the
front-runners for a spot in the conference title game on
    December 5th.

But in the last three seasons it has not been a case of the Red
Raiders rolling over for the Aggies. Texas Tech has won the
    three contests by a combined 13 points -- 14-7 in 1995, 13-10 in
1996 and 16-13 last season in Lubbock.

In last season's game, a little-known freshman named Ricky
Williams gained 79 of Tech's 126 rushing yards as the Red
Raiders overcame a lackluster effort by quarterback Zebbie
Lethridge. This season, Williams himself averages nearly 167
yards per game, good for third in the nation.

But Williams will be tested by a rushing defense that is one of
the best in the nation and allows under 100 yards per game. The
"Wrecking Crew" unit is led by Dat Nguyen (Pronounced Win) and
fellow linebacker Warrick Holdman. The pair rank 1-2 on the
    team in tackles.

The recent success by the Aggies can in large part be
contributed to Randy McCown, who replaced Branndon Stewart as
quarterback four games ago. The junior is not called on to
throw very often, but he has been accurate, completing nearly 58
percent of his passes with just one interception.

"Randy has given us a spark at quarterback, he's really helped,"
said Aggies coach R.C. Slocum. "You never know for sure but I
just look at his production, the throws he has made and the
scrambles he's made for first downs."

"He (McCown) has really done a good job," countered Texas Tech
coach Spike Dykes. "He's a good player. He makes big plays.
But they have good receivers, they have good backs and their
    defense is superb."

Another great matchup should take place between Red Raiders wide
receiver Donnie Hart and the Texas A&M secondary. Rich Coady,
one of the best safeties in the nation, will provide help for
cornerbacks Jason Webster and Jay Brooks, a freshman.

Hart has caught 31 passes for 656 yards -- an average of 21
yards per catch -- and seven of the team's nine receiving
    touchdowns.
