PRO FOOTBALL NOTEMonday, May 13, 7:11 PM(ADDING BUTCH DAVIS QUOTE) *Browns vice president Dwight Clark resigns* -------------------------------------------- BEREA, Ohio (Ticker) -- Dwight Clark stepped down Monday as director of football operations for the Cleveland Browns, apparently after losing a power struggle with upper management. While no replacement was named, CNN/SI reported on its web site that control of football operations is expected to be won by Pete Garcia, who last year came to the Browns along with coach Butch Davis to be an assistant coach in charge of football development. The 40-year-old Garcia became close to Davis when he served as director of football operations at Miami for five years. "Dwight and I have had extensive meetings over the last two weeks and, as a result of those meetings and a lot of dialogue, it was concluded that Dwight would move on," team president Carmen Policy said. CNN/SI reported that Garcia may have forced the issue by interviewing for a high-level position at Miami. It is believed that Davis was not a big supporter of Clark and wanted Garcia to have a larger role with the Browns. Davis, however, denied any rift with Clark. "I had a very good and easy working relationship with Dwight and enjoyed talking with him about players, football, opposing teams and our draft preparations," Davis said. "We always had a good dialogue and a nice exchange of ideas. I assumed we would be working together again during the 2002 season, so I was surprised and disappointed to learn he was leaving." The 45-year-old Clark joined the Browns in November 1998 after 19 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers' organization. He came to Cleveland with Policy shortly after Alfred Lerner was awarded ownership of the team. Clark was part of five Super Bowl championship teams with the 49ers, two as a player and three as an executive. His greatest moment as a player was catching a touchdown pass from Joe Montana in the 1981 NFC championship game against Dallas that propelled the 49ers into Super Bowl XVI. The Browns also announced that advance scout Keith Kidd also will leave the team. Cleveland was 7-9 last year in its first season under Davis. st 05-13-02 19:10 et |
