PRO FOOTBALL NOTETuesday, January 23, 2:25 PM*Rams add Ellard, Jackson and Zampese to coaching staff* -------------------------------------------------------- ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Henry Ellard, one of the top wide receivers in NFL history, is back with the St. Louis Rams as a coach. Ellard, 39, was named to Mike Martz's staff Tuesday as an offensive assistant. Martz also promoted Bobby Jackson to associate coach and named Ken Zampese wide receivers coach. Ellard played 16 seasons in the NFL, the first 11 with the Rams. He spent last season as coach of Fresno State. "A lot of guys play the game but don't understand what they do and why they do it and have real nice careers and are really good players," Martz said. "Henry was a great player that really understands the game. "He had such a great feel for his position and understanding of it that he'll bring a different dimension to that receivers group. He has a passion for coaching. A lot of ex-players get into coaching because that's what they know. It's football. They don't have the real passion or drive like a guy like Henry does. Ellard still holds club records for career receptions (593) and receiving yards (9,761). He also played four seasons with the Washington Redskins and one with the New England Patriots before retiring in 1998. With the Rams, Ellard will assist a group that has earned the nickname "The Greatest Show on Earth," led by quarterback Kurt Warner, running back Marshall Faulk and receiver Isaac Bruce. St. Louis has led the NFL in points the last two seasons. Jackson, 60, will maintain his duties as offensive coordinator and running backs coach in addition to his new duties as associate coach. Zampese, 33, replaces Al Saunders as wide receivers coach. Saunders was named offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday. st 01-23-01 14:24 et |
