Despite winning the Central Division and advancing to the NFC Championship game, the Bucs fired coordinator Mike Shula after their offense finished 28th overall and 30th in passing. Steckel helped guide the Titans to their first Super Bowl with the NFL's sixth-best offense before losing to the St. Louis Rams, 23-16. Tennessee scored at least 30 points fives times last season, averaging 34.7 in the final four regular-season contests. "We are extremely excited to bring a coach with Les Steckel's experience to run our offense," Bucs coach Tony Dungy said. "His track record with NFL offenses is impressive, especially this past year when he helped lead the Titans to the brink of a Super Bowl victory." Steckel, 53, served as coach of the Minnesota Vikings in 1984 and has been an assistant with Minnesota, Denver, New England and San Francisco. st 02-20-00 23:15 et |
