#Sunkist Signs Pact With Reorganized AVP#

Sunkist Remains Official Soft Drink of Pro Volleyball Tour
PLANO, Texas, March 17/PRNewswire/ -- Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc.
(DPSU), has signed an agreement to renew the Sunkist sponsorship
of the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP). Under the
agreement, Sunkist will continue as the official soft drink of
the AVP. The newly reorganized AVP tour, sporting a new
management team and reorganized investment structure, is
scheduled to begin competition May 1 at the Clearwater, Fla.,
Grand Slam.
"The AVP has been an effective branding partner," said Adrienne
Montgomery, director-flavors, DPSU. "The Sunkist brand image of
fun and sun is reinforced through our sponsorship of this
premier sports organization, and our high visibility at each
tour event also brings new consumers to the brand."
The AVP sponsorship also provides Sunkist bottlers opportunities
for local marketing activity with retailers, including store
displays and consumer promotions. Four events on the current
12-stop tour will be Sunkist Open title events, including Dallas
(June 5-6), Belmar, N.J. (June 26-27), Muskegon, Mich. (July
10-11), and the Manhattan Beach, Calif., Grand Slam (August
28-29).
"Belmar and Muskegon have been hugely successful stops on the
AVP tour for 15 years, so Sunkist is excited to have those as
title events. The Dallas event is important to us as the home
of DPSU, and we are also excited about Manhattan Beach because
it's touted as the Wimbledon of beach volleyball," Montgomery
said. "Sunkist soft drinks have a strong association with
Southern California and the beach lifestyle, which only makes
our sponsorship of the AVP a better fit."
"The AVP is very pleased to have Sunkist back as the official
soft drink of the AVP tour," said Bill Berger, CEO-AVP. "As the
new AVP grows, the continued support of a legendary brand like
Sunkist reemphasizes the lifestyle atmosphere the AVP conveys to
its constituents."
The AVP concluded the 1998 season in financial difficulty,
eventually declaring bankruptcy. New investment financing
combined with a new full-time management group has enabled the
tour to continue with confidence in 1999.
