HOCKEY NOTEThursday, September 2, 7:10 PM*Penguins sign RW Tom Chorske, two others* ------------------------------------------ PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins today signed journeyman right wing Tom Chorske, an unrestricted free agent, and forwards Greg Crozier and Dylan Gyori. Terms of the deals were undisclosed. The moves come one day after the NHL approved the sale of the team to former Penguins great Mario Lemieux. A bankruptcy court judge in Pittsburgh is expected to sign off on the deal Friday, according to the NHL Players Association. Chorske, a speedy penalty killer, was with three teams last season, recording three assists, eight penalty minutes and a minus-8 rating in 26 games and missing another 48 due to an abdominal injury. He was dealt from the New York Islanders to the Washington Capitals in mid-October with an eighth-round pick for a sixth-rounder, and was shipped to the Calgary Flames in March for future considerations. Chorske, who will be 33 on September 18, has 114 goals, 117 assists and 223 penalty minutes in 559 games over parts of 10 seasons for the Flames, Capitals, Islanders, Ottawa Senators, New Jersey Devils and Montreal Canadiens. A first-round pick by Montreal in 1995, the 6-1, 212-pound Chorske had his best season for the Devils in 1993-94, when he recorded a career-best 21 goals and 20 assists in 76 games. Crozier, 23, was a third-round pick of the Penguins in 1994. The 6-3, 180-pounder played four seasons at the University of Michigan, totaling 38 goals and 41 assists in 157 games. Gyori, 20, tied for second in the Western Hockey League last season with 118 points, registering 53 goals and 65 assists. The 5-11, 189-pounder collected 115 goals, 146 assists and 288 penalty minutes in 213 games with Tri-City. st 09-02-99 19:04 et |
