*Lazio beats Mallorca, 2-1, to win last Cup Winners' Cup*
    ---------------------------------------------------------

BIRMINGHAM, England (Ticker) -- The final Cup Winners' Cup goes
    to Lazio of Rome.

The Italian club got the tie-breaking goal from Pavel Nedved in
the 81st minute in a 2-1 victory over Spain's Mallorca today at
Villa Park, taking the last trophy in this tournament.

The Cup Winners' Cup started in the 1960-1961 season, matching
the winners of cups in their respective countries. It will be
absorbed by the expanding UEFA Cup next fall. Always considered
second or third to the European Cup or the UEFA Cup, the
competition has faded in recent years.

Christian Vieri gave Lazio the lead in the seventh minute.
Giuseppe Pancaro sent a long cross from his half into the
penalty area, where Vieri rose above Mallorca defender Javier
Olaizola and sent a looping header over the outstretched hand of
goalkeeper Carlos Roa and into the back of the net.

Dani leveled for the Spaniards four minutes later as he was left
alone in front of the goal and side-footed a pass from Jovan
    Stankovic into the net.

Nedved broke the deadlock nine minutes from time. A sloppy
clearance from Gustavo Siviero left a loose ball at the top of
the penalty area. Nedved volleyed a shot past the diving Roa.

The first and last trophies went to Italian clubs as Lazio
closed the 38-year history of the tournament the way Fiorentina
    opened it.

Lazio, which celebrated 99 years of existence in January, spent
nearly $120 million to put together a top-notch lineup and has
essentially accomplished its goals set before the season.

Playing in a European Cup final for the second straight year,
Lazio has lost just once in the last 20 matches in Europe. That
loss was to fellow Italians from Inter Milan in last year's UEFA
    Cup championship, 3-0.

Lazio, which qualified over Lokomotiv Moscow by way of road
goals rule in a 1-1 aggregate score, became the first Italian
team to win the Cup Winners' Cup since Parma in 1993.

Parma won the UEFA Cup last week in a strong 3-0 showing over
    French side Olympique Marseille.

Lazio won in England for the first time. It was defeated by
English sides Arsenal in the 1970-71 UEFA Cup, 2-0, and Ipswich
Town in the same competition three years later, 4-0.

The Romans follow this match with a chance to win the Serie A
title on Sunday. They currently trail AC Milan, 67-66.

Mallorca, which was in its first European competition at any
level, posted a 2-1 aggregate victory over English side Chelsea
    to make the final.

Mallorca features perhaps one of the top defenses in Europe,
having conceded just 26 goals in 34 matches in the Spanish
league. In its first eight Cup Winners' Cup matches, it allowed
    only four goals.

But at Villa Park, the modest Spanish side faced one of the most
potent offensive threats in Europe. Lazio has scored a domestic
league-high 63 goals in 33 matches and has also allowed the
    fewest -- 30.

Mallorca also sits second in domestic competition, 10 points
behind Barcelona, which was the last Spanish team to win this
    Cup in 1997.

Mallorca had performed well on British grounds with a 1-1 draw
at Chelsea and a 1-0 victory over Hearts of Scotland in the
    first round.

Both finalists went unbeaten and recorded identical results of
three wins and five ties in eight matches en route to the title
    game.
