Collins digs up new low

By MIKE ULMER -- Toronto Sun

TAMPA -- Super Bowl XXXV was the most disappointing night of Kerry Collins' career, and that's saying something.

Collins was hammered by a relentless Baltimore defence, as the Ravens hammered the New York Giants 34-7.

Collins completed 15 of 39 passes with four interceptions. His longest completion was 19 yards and he could have been picked off at least two more times.

The Giants quarterback had emerged as the feel-good story of the Super Bowl. He was honest in describing the hills and valleys of his NFL career with the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints. Those stops included allegations of racism, alcohol-related brushes with the law and an admission that he was not a leader.

 'A BAD READ'

Collins' most damaging error last night came late in the second quarter when Anthony Mitchell picked off his pass at the Baltimore one-yard line.

"I saw Ike (Hilliard, Giants receiver) running free and it was just a misread, a bad read, on my part," Collins said. " Obviously, we were in a position to put points on the board and it was very costly."

Collins would go on to throw interceptions in his first two third-quarter possessions. And, when linebacker Duane Starks routinely intercepted a Collins pass late in the third and returned it for a 49-yard score, the game was over, Baltimore ahead 17-0.

"I knew what coverage I had, I knew all those things," Collins said. "Their guy stepped in front of it. I think he led me all the way.

"This is the most disappointing loss I've ever been involved with. It wasn't a lack of effort or preparation. I didn't play the way I wanted to."

Collins said he wanted another chance.

"I'll come back from this, just like I did from a lot of things," he said. "I'm going to keep on working until I get the job done."
