30 best athletes

Few items on a sports page provoke more arguments than the selection of the best athletes of the past year, or the past 10 years. Naturally, by selecting the 30 best athletes of the past three decades, one is exposed to a barrage of criticism and insults.

But George Gross has never opted out of an assignment. So, here, in no particular order, are 30 athletes in various sports whom George rates among the best and most publicized over the past 30 years:

-- Mark Spitz, seven Olympic gold medals in swimming for the United States at the 1972 Olympics in Munich

-- Muhammad Ali, boxer of the century

-- Mike Tyson, the boxing machine

-- Carl Lewis, nine Olympic gold medals in track and field

-- Donovan Bailey, Canada's and the world's fastest sprinter in 1996
