TripAdvisor users weigh in on best, worst hostels Images: Top 10 hotels under $19 Images: World's top hostels revealed

A hostel reservation site has released a list of the top-rated lodgings around the world for backpackers and budget travellers looking to book their next accommodations.

Compiled by member reviews, HostelBookers.com ranked the top hostels across the continents in categories such as Best Atmosphere, Best for Solo Travelers, Best for Couples, Best Newcomers, Best Value Cheap Hotel, and Most Popular.

In the category of top three overall accommodations around the world, cities such as Marrakech, Chicago and Cusco, Peru got double nods within their respective continents.

For example, users named the Chicago Getaway Hostel and HI-Chicago two of the top three lodgings in North America. Planet Traveler in Toronto was also singled out for being the best in Canada.

The awards for top three accommodations are given to properties that receive the highest overall customer rating. A minimum of 25 reviews received in 2012 is required for a hostel to be considered for an award.

One of the common denominators throughout the top-ranked hostels on the list, meanwhile, is the wide range of services and amenities important to young, budget travelers often embarked on odyssey-like journeys: free wi-fi, no curfews, washing machines, 24-hour reception, and safety deposit boxes.
