Short RV trips and the simple life are what keeps country star Dolly Parton’s marriage to husband Carl Dean Thomas alive after almost 50 years.
The legendary singer wed her reclusive husband in 1966 and they’re planning to celebrate their half-century wedding anniversary next year.
Parton, who was just 20 when she wed her man, tells People her marriage works because she and her husband are opposites, explaining, “They say that opposites attract, and it’s true. We’re completely opposite, but that’s what makes it fun. I never know what he’s gonna say or do. He’s always surprising me.
“He’s a deep person, but he has a great and warped sense of humour. He makes me laugh and entertains me. He’s very secure within himself.”
And the couple’s idea of fun is taking short road trips together in their RV.
She adds, “We like to get out in our little RV and just be simple. I love to read, I love to cook, I love to be with my husband. I put on my little comfy clothes - I call them my baby clothes - and we just relax.
“He loves to go on vacation or on little trips, but he doesn’t want to be gone a long time. He wants to be mostly around the house. He knows I’m just the opposite. I can’t go enough places. I can’t do enough things. He loves that. He’s independent. He doesn’t need me in his face, and it’s the same with me.
“But when we’re together, we have enough things in common that it works. We love the simple life. We can be calm and just have a good time.”
