The world in 1,000 trips

What would be on your

What would be on your "must-see" life list? (Comstock Complete)

Q: Recently I read a fascinating travel article on 10 must-see places around the world. However, I could not find any travel information on any of them. Do you have any suggestions for must-see places and can you provide websites?

-- W. Cheng, Toronto

A: If you haven't picked up a copy of the sensational New York Times bestseller 1000 Places to See Before You Die: A Traveler's Life List, do. It's an excellent resource. With a reported 2.2 million copies in print, Patricia Schultz's book has spent more than 140 weeks on the bestseller charts and lists places such as the Dead Sea, the Great Pyramids of Giza and Beijing's Forbidden City.

Since it was first published by Workman Publishing Company in 2003, Schultz has penned another book titled 1000 Places To See in Canada and the U.S.A. Before You Die, which was released last year.

You may have read a Top Ten Places To Check Out article, which I also came across last fall. It listed Mongolia's Gobi Desert, The Philippines' Taal Volcano and Ecuador's Otavalo Market in the top three.

For more travel information on these destinations, visit Mongolia's ministry of tourism at www. mongoliatourism.gov.mn, the Philippine department of tourism at philippines.com and Ecuador's ministry of tourism at vivequador.com.

Q: Relatives from Europe are visiting this summer. Can you suggest a guide or tourist office I could contact for information on events and places around Georgian Bay?

-- G. Schmidt, Oakville

A: Iconic images of beautiful Georgian Bay have inspired many to visit over the years. Its sheer natural beauty will surely captivate your guests as well. There are many good resources for the area. Start with the folks at Georgian Bay Tourism -- georgianbaytourism.on.ca or 1-800-263-7745. Another good site -- Georgianbaycountry.com -- is currently being revamped but parrysound.com/fun/explore also has good info.

In addition, the Southern Georgian Bay Chamber of Commerce recently issued a new 2008 Visitor & Information Guide. The 75-page digest is packed with information to plan a visit to one of Ontario's most popular destinations. There are contacts for accommodations, attractions, boating, dining, recreation maps. To download a free copy, go to southerngeorgianbay.on.ca/tourism/index.html.
