Know rules when taking kids away

By ILONA KAUREMSZKY -- Special to Sun Media

Q: My husband and I will be travelling abroad with my grandson (age 5). What documents do I need?

-- S. Drury, Toronto

A: Make sure you and your grandson leave with proper identification. Canadian children must have their own passport. Consular Affairs, part of the Foreign Affairs Department, has a checklist. Visit voyage.gc.ca and click on "Children and Travel." According to Passport Canada (ppt.gc.ca) you should have the child's birth certificate showing the names of both parents and any legal documents pertaining to custody.

You'll need a parental consent letter with the following details:

- If the child is travelling with one parent, the consent letter authorizing travel must be signed and dated by the other parent.

- If the child is travelling without either parent, the consent letter authorizing travel must be signed and dated by both parents.

- A death certificate, if one of the parents is deceased.

- Also check the Travel Tips section "Travelling With Children," as well as the Travel Documents section titled "Travel Documents for children."

Q: I'm flying to Italy where I will have a short stop in Rome. I plan on doing some sightseeing before I catch a train to Pisa. I'll be packing lightly (one big backpack) and I don't want to lug it around. Where I can keep it? Thanks.

-- H. Johnston, Toronto

A: Once you land at the Leonardo da Vinci airport (FCO), also known as the Fiumicino Airport in Fiumicino (adr.it), you can take a train directly downtown to the Stazione Termini (Central Station).

You can get these trains by following signs pointing to FS (Ferrovie dello Stato/National Railways) and follow the arrows in the airport to the train station area. The station is located across from the airport.

The 30-minute non-stop ride costs 9,50 euros -- about $14. You can purchase tickets from the automatic vending machines located at the Fiumicino airport and Termini station or from the ticket counter located at the Fiumicino airport or from any Tabacchi (Tobacconist) shop.

Once you arrive at the central station in Rome, there are lockers available on the lower level. These lockers are open from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Cost is 3.10 euros --about $5 per piece of luggage for five hours.
